From National Tree to National Dog (Part 1)!
The Silver Birch (Betula pendula) has been the national tree of Finland since 1988 and there are literally millions of them throughout the country. The Finnish Spitz was declared national dog of Finland a few years earlier in 1979. So it seems natural to use wood from the national birch tree to make images and products representing the national dog! We have a number of such products made by Veico in Central Finland. We have a key ring, clock, pot stand, and kitchen set. The newest item we have is a large wall-hanging in the shape of a Finnish Spitz. This has been made specially for our Society and is unavailable elsewhere.

Finnish Spitz birch wood clock by Veico – * SOLD OUT * – please enquire about special orders
The very elegant Finnish Spitz clock is designed and made in Finland by Veico out of local birch wood. The size of the clock (in a protective cardboard box) is 23 x 24 x 5 cm and it weighs 469 grams (in the box). The clock is square and is cut out of solid birch with the image of a Finnish Spitz and the hour numbers burned into it. The surface is treated with a natural wood oil to keep the dirt off. On the reverse side is the clock mechanism which operates quietly with one AA battery (not supplied).
Finnish Spitz birch wood key ring by Veico – £4.00
The Finnish Spitz key ring is made in Finland by Veico out of local birch wood. The size of the keyring is roughly 5 x 5 x 1 cm and they weigh 8 grams. The wood is cut in the shape of a Finnish Spitz with an image of one burned into it.
Each keyring costs £4 before postage and packing costs. Same image and size also available as a fridge magnet or badge with safety pin - also £4 each.

This is a set of 2 kitchen items – a bag closer and a pot watcher made in Finland by Veico out of local birch wood. Both items have the image of a Finnish Spitz burned into the wood (slightly smaller than the image on the keyring). The items come with a descriptive card (Bag closer - “I keep the bag tightly closed to preserve the flavour”, Pot watcher - “Put me under the lid to keep your pot from boiling over”). The card and 2 items are sealed together in a plastic wrapper. The package size is 20 x 9 x 1 cm and it weighs 32 grams.

The Finnish Spitz pot stand is designed and made in Finland by Veico out of local birch wood. The size is 20 x 20 x 1.5 cm and it weighs 220 grams. The pot stand is cut out of solid birch in the shape of a dog paw with the image of a Finnish Spitz and paw burned into it. It has been treated with a darker coloured wood oil to keep the dirt and water off. Although designed for practical use in the kitchen, it could be also used as a nice wall decoration with a small hook attached!
Finnish Spitz shaped birch wood wall-hanging by Veico – £10.00 (only 1 left)
This is cut in the shape of a Finnish Spitz with the image of one burned into the wood. It is designed and made by Veico in Finland out of local birch wood. The size is 17 x 15 x 1.5 cm and it weighs 105 grams. It is like a much larger, thicker, and heavier version of the key ring (without the metal ring). It can be hung on the wall as a decoration using the hole on the back or by attaching a small hook. It will also stand freely on a firm level surface although it may need some form of support if you intend to do that permanently. This item was made specially for the FSS and is not sold in this form by the manufacturer (they market it for a higher price as a sauna thermometer with temperature markings and a dial).
